The Piano Concerto entitled Oceans Apart was written by New York-native composer Justin Dello Joio (the son of the celebrated American composer Norman Dello Joio, 1913-2008, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for his Meditations on Ecclesiastes) for Garrick Ohlsson, who preceded the composer by a few years at the school and who, in 1970, received worldwide attention as the first (and to date only) American to win the International Chopin Piano Competition.
